February 3 is Setsubun
(or 'seasonal dividing' day).
February happens to be the coldest month; however, according to the
lunar calendar, on Setsubun, it is the last day of winter.
Mamemaki (or bean-tossing) is conducted on Setsubun.
People shout "Oni wa soto, Fuku wa uchi!" (or 'Evil spirits out,
and in with good luck!") while throwing beans.
In order to bring in the new season spring, demons must be chased away.
People eat the same number of beans as their age.
They wish for continuing health throughout the year.
