People enjoy O-tsuki-mi
(or Moon Viewing) in mid-September.
The full moon around this period is called Chushu no Meigetsu
(or harvest moon) and considered the most beautiful moon of the entire
year.
This custom was introduced from China in the 10th Century.
Tsuki-mi-dango (or dumplings), susuki (or pampas grass),
grapes and chestnuts in season are offered to the moon.
Legend has is that a rabbit is pounding rice-cakes
(or engaged in mochi-tsuki) on the moon.
The full harvest moon in the clear autumn skies is quite enchanting.
