Hina-Matsuri

March 3 is Hina-Matsuri, or Doll Festival.
The Hina dolls are displayed to wish girls' happiness and well-being.

The Hina-Matsuri began 1,000 years ago during the Heian Period.
Its observance on March 3 was set in the Muromachi Period.
The Hina dolls have been displayed since the Edo Period.
On platforms known as Hina-dan, dolls such as O-Dairi-sama (or the emperor and the empress), San-nin Kanjo (or the three court maids), and Go-nin Hayashi (or the court quintet) are displayed.

Families celebrate the occasion by eating Chirashi-zushi (or unrolled Sushi), Sakura-mochi (or bean paste-filled rice cakes with cherry leaves), Hishi-mochi (or diamond-shaped rice cakes), and Hina-arare(or rice puffs) as well as drinking Shiro-zake (or rice malt sake).
