AJALT is a great language teaching center and I have enjoyed my four years learning from one of its sensei's. When I first started with AJALT, I did not know Japanese at all and my sensei has taught me everything from scratch. In the beginning stages, I could not even order food at a restaurant and would often have to have one small set lunch at a restaurant followed by another set small lunch somewhere else because the waitress could not understand. Now, I have the ability to travel around Japan by myself without trouble. I can now also carry on a conversation with Japanese people allowing me to talk to a broader range of people. The AJALT teachers are also very flexible both in terms of time as well as subject matter. For example, I can choose to focus certain lesson on business language, health topics, maps, or anything else. Overall, AJALT is a great way to learn Japanese because of the quality of the teachers and flexibility of the programs.

一番初めにAJALTで始めたとき、日本語は全然わからなくて、先生はゼロからすべて教えてくれました。はじめのころは、レストランで注文することすらできず、小さなランチセットを食べた後で（それでは足りないので）、別のレストランでまた小さなランチセットを食べたりしていました。これもウェイトレスに私の日本語がわかってもらえなかったからです。今では日本中をひとりで問題なく旅行することができます。また、いろいろな日本人と話をすることもできるようになりました。

When I came to Japan, colleagues and friends recommended AJALT for my Japanese lessons.
I started my lessons with Y-sensei in March. And that is a very lucky choice.
Studying Japanese while starting a new job and adapting to a new country is rather challenging. But Y-sensei adapts to my pace of learning (which is rather slow), she has found a way to teach, which is perfect for me. And despite my full schedule in Japan, I am looking forward to every lesson, because it is interesting, very well prepared and efficient. It is also because Y-sensei is a very nice person and it is pleasant to start the day with her Japanese lesson in the morning.
Sometimes (tokidoki) I joke that my Japanese teacher is excellent - but she had a bad student. While the first part is entirely true, I realize now (after nine month) that even this bad student made good progress with an accomplished teacher.

日本に来たとき、同僚や友人から日本語のレッスンにAJALTを勧められました。私は3月にY先生とレッスンを始めました。これは本当にラッキーな選択でした。新しい仕事を始め、外国での生活に適応している最中に日本語を勉強するということは、かなり大変なことです。でも、先生は私の学習のペース（どちらかといえば遅い方ですが）に合わせてくれ、私にぴったり合った教え方を見つけてくれました。

日本ではスケジュールはいつもいっぱいなのですが、私は日本語レッスンをいつも楽しみにしています。レッスンはとてもおもしろいですし、よく準備がしてあり効率的だからです。それに、僕の先生は人柄もとてもよく、朝、先生とのレッスンで一日を始めるのはとても気分がいいものです。

時々私は、「私の日本語の先生は本当にすばらしい、でも先生はとてもできが悪い生徒を持っている」と冗談を言います。この最初の部分は全くの真実です。でも、9か月たった今、こんなにできが悪い生徒でも熟練した先生の指導のおかげで、とても進歩したと実感しています。

When I came to Japan at the advanced age of 60 in 2000, I was reluctant to go to any language school. Although my husband is Japanese which may be considered a big advantage by some, that was not the case at all. We continued speaking German at home and outside he'd take care of me. However, after 3 years of walking around illiterately and hardly able to communicate I got so frustrated that I felt it was time for a change.

Somehow I came across a supplement of the Daily Yomiuri newspaper dealing with various language schools. The article about AJALT attracted me immediately and after further checking the school's homepage I decided to give it a try. Soon my worries were a thing of the past. Students, most of them could be my children or even grandchildren, as well as teachers accepted me in the kindest way in a relaxed and stress-free atmosphere.

In each class at AJALT you'll be taught by several qualified and experienced teachers, male and/or female, young and/or not so young in a rotating system. By this method one already becomes very flexible in listening and responding. Classes are based on "Japanese for Busy People", the textbook developed by AJALT. Besides we were given short dialogues which summarized the contents of the respective chapter and are useful in everyday situations. These dialogues had to be repeated the following lesson in a role play which everybody really enjoyed and by which we gained confidence in our speaking ability. Nobody was left behind and even the least gifted, as far as foreign language learning is concerned, finally succeeded.

Now, after having finished the intermediate class I'm going on with private lessons in order to deepen my vocabulary in the field of my hobbies and other personal needs as a foreign member in a Japanese family. My teacher is exceptionally adjusting to my pace and requests, providing me with additional and background information so as to give me an insight into Japanese lifestyle, culture and history.

For me, the lessons at AJALT are a part of my life which I wouldn't like to have missed out on it. In short, I can only warmly recommend AJALT to anybody, regardless of needs or age, group or private lessons.

2000年に60歳という高齢で日本に来たとき、語学学校に行く気持ちはありませんでした。主人は日本人なので、とても有利だと思われる方もありますが、私の場合はまったくそうではありませんでした。うちでは相変わらずドイツ語で話し、外では主人がすべてやってくれていました。けれども、読み書きもできず、そして他人とコミュニケーションをほとんど取れない状態で3年間過ごした後、イライラがつのり、何とかしなければと思うようになりました。

そんな時、デイリーヨミウリの日本語学校特集号を偶然手にしました。AJALTについての記事に目がとまり、さらにホームページを見て、AJALTに行ってみようと思いました。すぐに私の心配は過去のものとなりました。私の子供、あるいは孫といえるような年齢のクラスメートや先生たちは、リラックスした緊張せずにいられる雰囲気の中で親切に私を受け入れてくれました。

AJALTのクラスは経験豊富な先生たち―男性、女性、若い人、そしてあまりそうではない人―が交代で担当します。こうすることにより、学習者は自然にいろいろな日本語に対する聞き取り力や対応力がつきます。授業はAJALTが開発した教科書"Japanese for Busy People"に沿って進んでいきます。それに加えて、それぞれの課のエッセンスをまとめたショート･ダイアログが与えられます。これは日常生活にもとても役立つ内容です。
このショートダイアログは次のクラスでロールプレイの形で復習されます。この復習はクラスの全員が楽しみ、また話す自信をつけることにもつながりました。クラスを途中でやめる人は誰もなく、語学学習に関して最も向かない人（私）も修了できました。

私は中級クラスも修了し、今は趣味や日本人の親戚付き合いなど個人的に必要な語彙を増やすために、プライベートレッスンをとっています。先生は私のペースやニーズに非常に合わせてくれています。同時に日本のライフスタイルや文化、歴史に対する私の理解がより深まるように、それに関する情報や背景も教えてくれています。

私にとって、AJALTの日本語レッスンは生活の一部であり、受けることを決心してとてもよかったと思っています。ニーズや年齢にかかわらず、私は誰にでもAJALTのグループレッスンやプライベートレッスンをお勧めします。

I amply recommend AJALT as an excellent Japanese Language Institute. They not only have an excellent teaching system but teachers with experience and disposition. The location is very convenient and the classrooms have a good environment. Most of all the teachers are the best.

They created the Japanese for Busy People texts, CD's and videos. The classes I have attended at AJALT are the best complement of the whole plan.
I enjoyed every class either in group or private. If you are a very busy person the private class is perfect, but if you have more time to spend I recommend the group. Both of them are very interesting.

I started to learn Japanese in AJALT and I do not want to quit ever.

“先生"と言う仕事”

“先生は二番目の母”私の国にはそういう表現がある。

先生というのは、自分の疲れは全然気にせず一生懸命に教え、生徒が喜ぶのを見ると自分もうれしくなる。寛大であり、自分が得た知識を生徒に教える、犠牲的で尊い仕事だ。

日本に来る前、私はラオスの国立図書館でボランティアに挑戦した。その時、色々なことをしたが、中でも、楽しくて、忘れられないのは英語を教えたことだ。教えたのは短い時間だったけれども、教師が生徒に責任を持つことが、いかに難しいかがはっきりわかった。それに、教えたことによって、先生がどう感じているかもわかった。また、生徒が頑張ったことで、自分が心底うれしく思えた。だからこそ、日本に留学中、もし自分ができる限り頑張って勉強すれば、先生も大変喜んでくれるのではないだろうか。

ところで、どの国でも学生は先生を尊敬している。また、先生の教えは、多くの人の人生に影響を与えると思う。すなわち、先生は学生の持っているいろいろな才能を引き出すことができるということだ。詳細に記述すれば、時間を気にすることなく、ゆっくり根気強く教えることによって、知識や才能を育て、最終的にはいい結果を出すからだ。

６か月前に日本に来て、新しい生活や日本語の勉強を始めた。最初の日から、先生方は日本語を教えてくださっただけではなく、学生達の性格もすぐに理解し、それぞれの異なった個性の学生達にどのように教えればよいか考えてくれていた。この日本語クラスの学生達は日本語のほかにもいろいろ学習した。学生達がよりよい結果を出すために先生方はさまざまな方法を考え、いいかどうか熟慮し、さらによく考えて、実行した。実験やスポーツ、インタビューなど、色々な面白い活動をさせてくれたことがよい例だ。それにより、知識だけではなく、多くのことが学べた。人々と協力することをはじめ、障害に対して我慢すること、ほかの人に気を配ることなどである。それらのことは他の所では経験できないのではないだろうか。　

こんなに短い時間でも、日本語がこのように話せるようになったのは先生方のおかげだ。これからも日本語だけではなく、可能な限り日本の習慣なども学ぶつもりだ。そして、自分の専門分野の知識の習得において、どんな険しさがあっても、あきらめることなく、一生懸命頑張ろうと強く思っている。

The Work of Teachers

There is a saying in my home country --- “A teacher is your second mother.”

A teacher does not think about herself, when she is tired. A teacher is happy, when his students are happy. A teacher is generous in imparting her knowledge to her students. Teaching requires sacrifice. A teacher's work is priceless.

Before coming to Japan, I volunteered at a national library in Laos. While I worked on many projects, the job I found most enjoyable and unforgettable was to teach English. I only taught for a short period of time, but I realized what a challenge it was to take on that responsibility. The experience also taught me how teachers felt. I felt happiness from the bottom of my heart, when my students worked hard. That is why I believe my teachers would be happy, if I worked the hardest I could during my studies in Japan.

Teachers are respected in any country. Their teachings influence many people's lives. A teacher has in his power the ability to foster each student's many talents. If a teacher taught with patience, without hurrying, she would bring out the best in her students by helping them gain knowledge and build on their talents.

I arrived in Japan six months ago and began my new life. I began studying Japanese. From day 1, my teachers not only taught Japanese but also put an effort into understanding their students and figuring out the best way to meet their individual needs. We learned many things beyond the Japanese language. Our teachers came up with many approaches for achieving the best results, closely examined their effectiveness, and made even more improvements. We were exposed to a lot of fun activities, like interviews, games, and experiments. We gained more than just simple knowledge: we learned to work with other people, overcome difficulties, and think about others. I'm not sure if I would have gained the same experience if I studied anywhere else.

My teachers helped me become proficient in Japanese in a short period of time. I plan to continue not just with my language studies but also with my efforts to learn the Japanese customs. I am determined to work hard to further my knowledge in my area of specialty and not to give up in the face of any obstacles I may face.
